Jansky löysi radiosignaaleja, jotka olivat peräisin maapallon ulkopuolelta tutkiessaan Bell Laboratoriesilla Atlantin ylittävän radioliikenteen häiriöiden lähteitä. Karl Jansky was named after Dr. Karl Guthe, who had been an important mentor to Cyril M. Jansky. Karl Jansky’s mother, née Nellie Moreau, was of French and English descent. Karl’s brother Cyril Jansky Jr., who was ten years older, helped build some of the earliest radio transmitters in the country, including 9XM in Wisconsin (now WHA of Wisconsin Public Radio) and 9XI in Minnesota (now KUOM). Jansky has been memorialized by the scientific unit "Jansky" that astronomers use every day as a measure of the strength of astronomical radio sources.

Karl Jansky, an American engineer, was born Oct. 22, 1905. Jansky worked for Bell Labs, and in the early 1930s he was assigned to develop an antenna that could be used for trans-Atlantic short-wave voice communications. He built what would turn out to be the world’s first radio telescope at Holmdel, New Jersey (see first image above). There’s a hidden universe out there, radiating at wavelengths and frequencies we can’t see with our eyes. Each object in the cosmos gives off unique patterns of radio emissions that allow astronomers to get the whole picture of a distant object.

Facebook gives people the power to At this location in 1931, Karl Jansky, a Bell Laboratories physicist and radio researcher, recorded for the first time radio signals from beyond the Earth. The source of these signals—radio noise at a wavelength of 14.6 meters—was the center of our Milky Way Galaxy.
