The engine was developed in the second half of the 1970s by the then Soviet Ivchenko-Progress design bureau. It is manufactured by the Motor Sich factory in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. It was the first engine in the USSR that could deliver more than 20,000 kgf (~196 kN or ~44,000 lbf) of thrust. The Ivchenko-Progress AI-450S is a turboprop engine designed by Ivchenko-Progress and built by Motor Sich. It is a two-shaft design with one gas generator shaft and one free turbine shaft. The 450 hp AI-450S is used on the Diamond DA50 -JP7, Bayraktar Akıncı UAV and Diamond Dart 450 and the 630 hp AI-450S-2 is used on the Evektor EV-55 . Ivchenko-Progress worked on derivatives based on the D-27 engine core, mostly within the 1988-1995 time frame.
